After the last rains, the land breathed deeply. Th After the last rains, the land breathed deeply. The soil, rich and generous, has become so fertile that every little gap now begs to be filled. As we begin to harvest our winter crops, humble leeks, sturdy broccoli and faithful onions. The garden quietly turns its gaze towards spring and summer. This year, those new beginnings take the form of red onions, spinach, beetroot and carrots, all finding their place in soil that feels truly alive. With such abundance comes its own challenge. The weeds rise quickly, persistent and unapologetic. Here in the Canaries, many choose the easier route: a spray, a poison, a chemical solution. We chose differently. We pull them by hand. Slowly. Patiently. Knowing that in time, they weaken, and the land settles into balance once more. It is hard work, but it is honest work. And we would rather tire our backs than feed our children a future laced with toxins. Five years ago, the land behind us was sprayed clean. When we first arrived, it had been a sea of poppies, the very flowers that gave our little girl her name. Today, after all this time, that soil remains bare, silent, lifeless. A quiet lesson written into the earth itself. And yet, we are still told that this is “normal”. That this is acceptable. One cannot help but wonder what state of mind allows such harm to feel reasonable. Seven years without a single chemical product, and our land tells a different story: vegetables thriving, fruit trees heavy with promise, bees humming, insects returning, life unfolding as it always meant to. Our New Year’s resolution: more family adventure Our New Year’s resolution: more family adventures 💚 We’ve been spending most weekends in January exploring our beautiful island, and it’s honestly become the highlight of our week. This Saturday we headed north to Sardina del Norte — somewhere we’d never visited before. The drive alone was spectacular. After all the rain this year, Gran Canaria is so green right now. Flowers blooming, trees blossoming, sheep in the fields, and big mountain views everywhere. Even the kids loved the 1hr 15 drive! What we hadn’t considered were the tides 🌊 With the recent storms, there were no beaches — just waves crashing against the walkway. Cue disappointed kids… and a quick regroup over a lovely seafood lunch at Restaurante La Cueva. Determined to salvage the day, we headed to La Cueva de Sansón. The drive there is not for the faint-hearted (very steep, narrow roads and no official parking), but the walk up was manageable even with a 3 and 6 year old — especially with dried snails, plants, twigs and mountain treasures to collect along the way 😉 And the caves? EPIC. Wild, quiet, and completely empty when we arrived. A proper off-the-beaten-track adventure, and the kids loved it. 🌄 Family adventure idea in Gran Canaria: Guayad 🌄 Family adventure idea in Gran Canaria: Guayadeque 🌄 We started 2026 with a promise to spend more time doing what we love as a family - and getting outdoors together is high on that list. This weekend, we explored a new part of the island and headed to Barranco de Guayadeque, famous for its caves, dramatic landscapes, and hidden footpaths. The drive itself is an adventure: narrow, winding mountain roads, towering rock faces, and plenty of jaw-dropping viewpoints. After the recent storms there were a few fallen rocks along the way, but we took it slow, stopped at viewpoints, spotted roadside caves, and arrived safely, definitely part of the experience! The cave restaurants here are well worth a visit. Huge cavernous spaces carved into the rock, with individual booths, stone tables, and benches. The food was generous and delicious (we even took leftovers home!). It does get warm and lively at peak times - caves have a way of amplifying sound - but it’s a very unique dining experience. Despite the busy restaurants, the walking paths through the barranco were wonderfully quiet. We had the trails almost to ourselves, explored with the kids, admired a row of traditional cave houses, and even saw running water in the stream, a rare and beautiful sight in Gran Canaria, thanks to all the recent rain. ✨ A brilliant day out for adventurous families, we’d absolutely recommend Guayadeque if you’re looking to explore beyond the beaches. #guayadeque #cavehouse #grancanaria #familylife #adventures

This peaceful lagoon and walking area is ideal for families — flat paths, plenty of space for children to explore, and beautiful green scenery that feels a world away from busy resort areas. It’s perfect for slow walks, nature spotting, chats, and letting little ones roam freely. We paired it with a visit to the historic town of Teror, just a short drive away. Teror is full of charm, with traditional Canarian balconies, lovely cafés, and great spots for lunch and a wander. ✨ Nature, culture, fresh air — and it doesn’t cost a penny. While the little ones revel in nature’s theatrics and hot chocolate is firmly on the menu for them, the adults will be embracing the moment in a far more civilised manner mulled wine in hand, fire on, and gratitude for days like these.
